Introduction: A Whimsical Match Strike That Steals the Show

If you're looking for a functional yet decorative piece to elevate your fireplace mantel or entryway, the Jonathan Adler elephant match strike might just be the perfect find. This white ceramic elephant match holder is more than just a pretty face—it's designed to strike matches, but does it live up to the hype? In this honest review, we'll dive into the pros and cons based on real buyer feedback to help you decide if it's worth your money.

With a 4.2-star rating from over 100 reviews, this porcelain match striker has clearly charmed many customers, but there are also some common complaints. Let's explore whether this elephant figurine match holder is a practical addition to your home or just a cute conversation piece.

Design and Appearance: A Charming Elephant Figurine

The first thing that catches your eye is the adorable elephant design. Crafted from white porcelain bisque, this white ceramic elephant match holder features a matte finish and a textured, scale-like body that adds a touch of sophistication. Standing 3.75 inches tall, 3 inches wide, and 2 inches deep, it's compact enough to fit on a small shelf or tabletop without overwhelming the space.

The elephant holds a cylindrical cup on its back, which is where you store the matches. The trunk is curled upward, adding to its whimsical charm. Many reviewers describe it as "beautiful" and "super cute," with several noting that it looks exactly like the product photos. It's a piece that seamlessly blends form and function, making it a delightful addition to any home decor.

Functionality: Does It Actually Strike Matches?

The core function of this product is to strike matches, and here's where things get a bit tricky. According to the official description, the base has a frictional surface that ignites strike-anywhere matches. However, not all matches are created equal. Several reviewers emphasize that you must use strike-anywhere matches; standard matches simply won't light.

For those who use the correct matches, the experience is generally positive. One reviewer said, "It works very well with everywhere matches." Another noted, "Sometimes I have to strike the matches a few times to get them to ignite, but it's not unreasonable." On the flip side, some users reported that it doesn't work at all, with one saying, "Matches do not light on base of elephant and good luck finding matches that will!"

So, if you're planning to use this as a functional match strike, be prepared to buy the right matches. If you're mainly looking for a decorative piece, this won't be an issue.

Versatility: More Than Just a Match Holder

One of the pleasant surprises from buyer reviews is the versatility of this elephant figurine match holder. Several creative customers have found alternative uses for it. One reviewer uses it as a toothpick holder, saying, "Beautifully made and perfect for storing toothpicks." Another suggested it would look cute on a makeup table to hold cotton swabs.

This versatility adds value, especially if you're not a frequent match user. It can serve as a charming organizer for small items, making it a multi-purpose decor piece. However, keep in mind that if you use it for other purposes, you might want to avoid getting the base dirty, as one reviewer noted they plan to use it only as decoration to prevent it from turning gray.

Quality and Craftsmanship: Built to Last?

Jonathan Adler is known for its high-quality home accessories, and this match strike appears to uphold that reputation. Customers frequently mention the nice quality and beautiful craftsmanship. The porcelain bisque material feels substantial and durable, and the matte finish resists fingerprints. Many reviewers were impressed with how well it arrived packaged, with one noting it "arrived in perfect condition."

That said, a few reviewers mentioned that the functionality doesn't quite match the aesthetic quality. But overall, the consensus is that the build quality is excellent, and it's a piece that will last for years with proper care.
